Papago M8 Iphone GPS App
I wanted to write about my findings about this iPhone app called Papago M8 – which is comprises of a GPS application for Malaysia and Singapore map. I noticed this app, was pretty good but, the support for the app especially the FAQ and the user manual needs to be updated.
Although this is a good app to use and helps me navigate accurately across Klang Valley, I do encounter a few problems with it.
- This app is not 100% written by native iPhone therefore, the app is sluggish even with iPhone 4 especially on the interface swipe part. However, thankfully the map update for gps navigation is acceptable on my end.
- Some may noticed that, on initial loading of GPS papago system, the map suddenly points to somewhere near KL. Please do not panic (haha – I noticed that, because I had a seperate papago system that behaves that way as well), the system needs time to locate the satellite and resync your location. Just take the iphone and run the app outside your house – walk around a bit let it sync the location.
- The third findings will be the most annoying implementation ever, which is – the sound volume system. A lot of you may noticed, that papago do not have settings for sound and at times, you will noticed that the sound in the app is way too soft? I took me quite a while to figure this out. It turns out the app is using your Ringer Master Speaker to play the sound. In IOS4, once you are in an app, you can adjust the app sound volume individually without affecting the master ringer volume. However, papago uses the master ringer volume which mean your iPhone’s master volume ( the speaker volume of your incoming phone call ). Turning volume (press +) during the app is running makes no use and will not increase the sound of the app. However, to increase the volume of the papago app, just exit the app and (press +) to increase the phone master volume. Make sure you are not in silent mode too. (see pictures below)
Figure 1.1 : Increasing the volume in app, won’t fix the volume problem.
Figure 1.2 : Increasing it here the springboard (main) menu will increase the overall app sound.
I hope this article help some of buyers buying this app, this is indeed one of the most “expensive” app I bought on iTunes. Hope they shaped up their app in the future. ![]()

there’s another problem, if u position ur iphone on landscape mode, whenever you approach a junction and the papago shows the small image of the junction (i dont know what is it called) the app will close by itself.
it wont happen if the iphone is on portrait position.
Great information! I subscribe this site.
I’m from russia, and we have no such sites…
Thanks for the volume tip. I had this problem too and changing the vol outside the app works.
no problem at least u get it working and using it now
Does anyone know if this apps uses your wi-fi or Data to get location ? It says does not need to connect to Wifi
its using gps, you will know if u get “an arrow indicator” at your iphone (gps enabled iphones model refer to apple) upper right corner. it doesnt need wifi nor 3g to triangulate. however , papago range is only limited to malaysia and singapore.
I used this app but my problem was, it’s like it is simulating by itself. My papago reached my destination even though i’m not there yet. It advises me to turn my 3rd left/right even though i haven’t turned my first left/right.
planning to buy this app for ipad2 but at its itunes page it said
“Because of the accuracy of AGPS is not reliable enough, so Papago will not use AGPS signal.”
I checked ipad2 spec and ipad2 only has AGPS. Do I also need to buy a BT GPS receiver?
thanks for the help
yup, agps is not tat reliable. readings are made via the 3g tower and then feedback to ur device sometimes it even lags behind which is disasterous when making crucial turning. unless u have iphone4 and above, dont bother getting it.
I am using papago philippines m7.1. How do you fix the orientation problem? The directions where you’re going should always be on top. But now, it is situated everywhere. It always turns diagonal so you won’t see anymore the intersections, etc. ahead. Is there a fix on this problem?
gee cant really tell orientation problem. maybe u should write to papago company.
Hi, i’ve purchased papago m8, but i don’t know how to use it. Care to help me. Tq!
First, always think about destination and where you want to go. Where you want to go always falls into two type of searchable destination
1. POI – Place of Interest ( a landmark building or some parking lot )
2. The street name – should you cannot locate or find the place of interest.
Obtain the address of destination, start with searching street name. Tap Road Search… and type in slowly the street name. You will see the system try to match your alphabet you type in. If it matches exact then, the system recognized the road name (sometimes roads are spelled in English instead) and will now search any road with the same name in different states or district. Choose the proper one.
Then, once you select that, the NAVI map will appear showing the street. Now since, you are on the street, the building you want to go, is probably nearby. I normally will try to POIs nearby under function tab below – and try to locate the building name I wanted to go, or at least a parking nearby. Once found, tap on function again Add To Favourite. You may rename anything you like after that. After that, to set the destination just select from favourite next time. First place I would program is my home so that, I can set it back home from the place I’m heading.
My app keeps closing by itself and basically make me can’t use it at all. Anyone can give me advices on how to solve this matter?
