Steps To Resolve And Avoid DLL Errors

Some computer problems may look more daunting to you than they really are simply because you are not familiar with them. A common example is the DLL error which is related to DLL or Dynamic Link Library files.

It is important to remember that DLL file errors can be easily taken care of once you understand the functions of these files and the reason behind the errors. DLL files are primarily used by multiple applications to perform a specified action. Since the action is the same, it makes sense to use a common file rather than each application having its own separate file for that task. Usually, the problems pertaining to DLL files are caused by missing, invalid, broken or incompatible files. In this article, we will discuss the reasons behind the DLL errors and also provide you with pointers on how to fix DLL errors.

Some of the common reasons behind DLL errors are listed below:

  • Overwriting of a new version of the DLL file with a previous one.
  • Removal of a shared DLL file or damage to an otherwise good DLL file by faulty hardware, such as a faulty hard disk and memory.
  • Removal of a DLL file by malicious programs, such as virus, spyware, and adware.
  • Invalid or incorrect entries related to DLL files in the Windows registry.

Broadly speaking, there are two sources behind all DLL errors, namely application and malware. Both of these sources are discussed below.

DLL errors due to applications

The majority of the DLL errors that occur due to applications can be fixed by restoring the original DLL files or updating the related software. To restore the DLL file, check to see if the vendor has released any new patches or an upgraded version of the application. If the manufacturer has released a new patch then promptly install it to get rid of the DLL error. For instance, you can fix the “xvidcore.DLL not found” error by downloading the latest XviD codec from the Internet. If you are unable to locate any new patch or new version of the application, then you will need to download the missing or corrupt DLL files to correct the error.

Other DLL errors, such as “msvcr80.DLL download” error can be corrected by deleting the corresponding file, which in this case will be the msvcr80.dll file and reinstalling the application.

DLL errors due to malware

The other major reason behind DLL errors is malware. Malicious programs, such as virus and spyware deliberately delete DLL files from your system, causing various DLL error messages to pop up on your screen. These malicious programs also add invalid entries and alter existing entries in the system registry thereby corrupting the registry. It is important that you regularly perform antivirus and anti-spyware scans on your system to protect it from malware. Also, use an advanced registry cleaning tool to scan and remove invalid and redundant entries from the registry. A clean and compact registry not only significantly reduces errors, but also enhances your system’s overall performance.
