For anyone stumped like I was, to include a variable in the snippet the correct syntax is ${varname}, not {$varname}.

So, in the examples above, it should be:

${msg}

not

{$msg}

I initially found snippets however I find that eclipse (what Aptanas based on) templates system is more powerful. I suggest giving it a look. A explanation of its use is available http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/opensource/tutorials/os-eclipse-code-templates/index.html
