Having Nightmares of MS Vista Wireless Disconnect?

disconnect Oh yeah an epic nightmare..at first you thought is was your ISP doing frequent maintenance then, you suspect it was your router giving problem and you exchange and upgrade the firmware…yet, the problem haunts you.

Every time you connect to your wifi router, and after an few minutes or sometimes an hour if you are lucky disconnect and the router resets by itself.

Fine, SP1 is here upgraded…still the same problem; as for my case my pc just ain’t good enough for a SP1 upgrade (I got BSOD right after that) so, I stopped the automatic update upon reaching SP1. So, who’s the culprit?

I’m writing this based on my scenario, so if you symptom of disconnecting is somewhat similar to mine you can go ahead and try out this method.

FYI my set has the following configuration: -

  • Intel Processor P4 Prescott 2.66 Ghz (non-dual core)
  • Intel Mobo D915PGN Bios Dated 06/09/2004
  • 2GB DDR RAM
  • MSI Geforce 7600 GT Series
  • NETGEAR WG311T Wireless Adapter with Booster
  • ArtNet ADSL2 Wireless
  • 240 GB Sata Drive
  • Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium OEM (patch right before SP1)

This solution also works for other networking issues people have been experiencing.

Just to name a few:

  • Windows Messenger issues – unable to connect
  • Large File and copy transfers
  • Large file transfers which seem to “hang” right in the middle of the transfer
  • Off and on network issues
  • Routers Having issues (basically dying forcing a reboot of the router)

Issue 5 fits my criteria to try out this method and so far I’ve left my PC on for like 6 hours for downloading and no DC since then!..WEEEEE FTW!. NOTE : Just because, I get to connect for like 6 hours that doesn’t mean I wont be dced forever, I still get dced off and on (1-2 times a day – occasionally), but is not as annoying as before.

After reading all kinds of posts and a couple of MS FAQ’s, it seems the main culprit is the Receive Window Auto-Tuning Level.

To fix this :-

  • Start up command prompt, you need to make SURE at the top of the command prompt window it say’s: “Administrator: Command Prompt – (see below)elevatedcmd
  • Turn off the Auto-Tuning Level. Enter the following into the command window:

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
  • You will be receiving an OK! sign as a reply. Once, you do – please REBOOT or RESTART the pc.
  • Once rebooted, enter to the command prompt and type in this commandnetsh int tcp show global
  • Test out your network, messenger, and other file copy functions and see if this doesn’t solve some issues. To revert back, just incase anything happens you can use this command.

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

If you are using NOTEBOOK or LAPTOPS like Lenovo series

Another factor to consider is that, you are on the default energy saving settings that Vista has provided your wifi adapter. It’s so energy savvy that, minor idle on network connection will terminate your wifi connection. If you are download or patching things using wifi, this can be extremely annoying. You can overcome this, by tweaking your wifi adapter power saving options under control panel.

Find the one that is selected, click on “Change plan settings” then, look for the link – change advance power settings. Look for wireless adapter settings -> power saving mode , turn the performance to maximum for both and click apply.

Everytime I try using the command, I get

“Set global command failed on IpPv4 The request operation requires elevation.”

    What does this mean?

If you encounter anything to do with the keyword “elevation” do the followings. You need to login as your administrator account and turn off UAC (User Access Control).

To do so, goto Control Panel > User Accounts > Turn User Account Control On or Off – Unchecked the checkbox to disable it. This allows you full control over your system such as installing stuff without prompting over and over again.
